Hesitation (7)

Hesitation
            0730 hours
            “Ah… That feels good.”
Tracy didn’t say anything as she looked at the champagne glass in front of her. She usually likes Mimosa, but she didn’t feel like it that day.
            “You’re not drinking…?”
She shook her head, then she sighed.
            “I don’t feel like it today…”
She turned to her friend, who put down another glass of dark beer.
            “Will you ever stop drinking…?”
Her friend turned to her and winked, then she drank the rest of beer in the glass. She then looked around and smiled.
“Look,” she said as she pointed to a group of men who was chatting on the table a few metres from them. They were all drinking beer or shots.
“Looks like they’re quite interesting,” she said. “Mind if I hit on them?”
One of the men turned to them, then he smiled and stood up.
            “No,” Tracy answered. “Just go.”
The girl smiled, then she stood up and walked to man, who shook her hand hard. Tracy could hear them talking despite the loud music.
“Hi, my name’s Dave. And you, pretty girl?”
“Oh, me? Just call me Devina…”
The girl, who introduced herself as Devina, then giggled. Tracy sighed and looked at her drink.
            “Whould you like something else…?”
“Can you get me some Coke?” she asked without looking up. The bartender took the beer glass as he nodded.
            RIIIIING
Tracy took her phone from her breast pocket, then she looked at it for a while. She pressed the green button, then she put the phone near her ear.
            “Hello…?”
“It’s me,” William said. “I’m calling from a phone booth, so I can’t spend too much time…”
Tracy could feel her heart beated faster with happiness, but also worry at the same time.
            “Are you alright…?”
William didn’t say anything as he looked at the coins in his hands. There were only two more 1-dollar coins, and a 50-cent coin. He bit his lower lip, then he inserted the 1-dollar coin.
“I’m fine, why are you asking?” he asked. She could feel her heart stopped upon that question, but then she tried to force a smile.
“I mean, it’s just kind of… unusual,” she said. “You called from a phone booth, at this time…”
“Sorry,” William said. “I just called to check on you. What are you doing?”
            “Um…”
Tracy was sure he could hear the loud music around her, but then she smiled.
            “Just hanging with a friend…”
            “In a bar? I see.”
William sighed, then he looked out of the phone booth to make sure nobody was watching him.
“Can we just… meet? Right now?”
            “Now?”
Tracy turned back as the bartender gave her a highball glass filled with ice and a red can. She could see Devina was dancing with her new friend, that Dave guy.
“Maybe I can,” she said. “Where…?”
            “Let’s see…”
William inserted another coin, then he looked around him.
            “Or, where are you?”
“No, you shouldn’t come,” she said. “It won’t be pleasant if they can recognize you.”
William bit his lower lip, then she smiled to the bartender as she put a 10-dollar bill on the table. The bartender took it, then he turned away.
“Whatever. Can you come to the library we usually meet at…?”
Tracy smiled, then she nodded. William glanced at his watch, then he looked out again.
            “I’ll wait for you.”
Tracy nodded, then she pressed the red button and put it back into her breast pocket. She took the red can, then she stood up and walked away from the bar.
            “Just dance…”
Tracy could hear the music thumping as she left the place. She never liked Lady Gaga one bit, so she didn’t listen too much to her songs.
            “You’re a good dancer, Devina…”
Devina smiled as she kept dancing with her new partner. Dave looked around, then he noticed a girl wearing a black dress and black button down coat walked out of the bar.
            “Isn’t that your friend?”
Devina stopped at her place and noticed that girl walking out, too. She was holding a red can in her hands. She turned to her partner, who was looking at her. She smiled and circled her arms around his neck.
“Let’s dance again,” she said. “That was really fun…”
•••
William put the book back into the shelf, then he took out another book and sighed.
            ‘The last Juror’
“My, all the books here are the west writers’,” he said. “I wonder if I can find any interesting ones here…”
He could suddenly feel a hand touched his shoulder. He turned back and saw a girl with long black hair tied like a ponytail, and she was wearing a black dress and black button down coat. She was already holding a book in her hands – ‘A stain in humanity’.
            “Looking for a book?”
He smiled as he put back the book into the small gap between the books.
“Just looking for an interesting one as I wait for you,” he said. “But all I can see are these books…”
“You should read Forsyth…” she suggested. “He always have shocking storylines…”
He smiled, then he touched her head and smiled.
“Let’s go somewhere nice to talk,” he said. She nodded, then they walked out of the library.
Tracy could feel William’s arms circled her shoulders as they stepped out of the library, then she looked up to him.
            “What’s wrong?”
William looked at her for a while, then he smiled.
            “It’s fine, I guess…?”
She could feel something was stuck in her throat, but then she blushed a little. Of course, she was happy.
“It is,” she said. “But you’re acting a little strange…”
William didn’t say anything as they stopped in front of a round table with two chairs. He smiled and let go of her.
“What do you want to drink?” he asked as he pulled a chair. “It’s on me…”
She looked at the board with the menu written on it, then she smiled.
            “A Frappe…?”
“Will you be able to sleep tonight?”
Tracy smiled and nodded. William looked at her for a while, then he walked to the counter.
“You sit down first,” he said. “I’ll order it.”
She sat on the chair he pulled before, then she watched him talk to the barista. She put her book on the table and smiled sadly as the barista moved to the coffee machine.
            “I haven’t got that much time left…”
The barista walked back to him with a white cup and a plastic glass on a tray. William put something on the table, then he took the tray and turned to walk to her.
            “Here, your Frappe…”
She smiled as he put the glass in front of her. He put the white cup and saucer in front of the plastic glass, then he sat on the other side.
“So,” she said. “What is it you want to talk about?”
William looked at her for a while, surprised, but then he sighed and looked away.
“I don’t know,” he said as he could feel his heart beated faster. “I just feel something is horribly wrong…”
Tracy could feel something made her heart beated faster, but then William looked down to his drink.
“I don’t know,” he said. “Seriously. I found my sister dead this afternoon…”
Tracy pretended to look surprised, but William quickly crossed a finger in front of his lip.
“Don’t be too loud,” he whispered. “I don’t need anyone else to know.”
She covered her mouth quickly, then she looked around. She then leaned forward to William as she looked around.
            “But why?”
“I think I’m going to find that out,” he said. “My apartment exploded when I was going out to buy groceries, and Camelia is dead…”
He touched his head and shook his head. She looked at him for a while, then she could feel something inside her broke down. She leaned back and looked at him. He looked depressed from her angle.
            “Where will you stay tonight?”
“I don’t know, but I think I’ll just stay somewhere cheap.”
            “Your stuff?”
            “That’s simple.”
She sighed as she sipped a bit of her Frappe, then she smiled.
“Then, stay at my place,” he said. “There’s a spare room…”
“It’s fine,” he said. “I don’t want to arise suspicion…”
He sighed again, then he looked at her for a while.
“Can you just…” he said. “Get out of here for a while?”
She could feel her heart stopped with surprise.
            Move out?
She snapped out of her shock as the thought crossed in her head. She looked at William, who was looking at her seriously.
            “But why…?”
            “Because…”
Something went across his mind, then he sighed again.
“I don’t want anyone else to get into this mess,” he said. “I mean, this is horrible. This can be another serial murder and…”
            “No, don’t say that.”
William could feel something warm held his hand. He looked up to her, who was looking down to their hands.
“I mean…” she said. “I know you can protect me…”
“In the worst case, if something happens to me,” he said. “What will you do…?”
She shook her head as she could feel something went across her body.
            “I mean…” she said. “I don’t want to be left behind…”
William looked at her for a while – something inside him broke down. He sighed and looked away as he pulled his hands.
            “We’re in public, hummingbird.”
She quickly snapped to the reality, then she blushed brightly as she pulled her hand.
            “S… sorry…”
            “No, it’s alright…”
William drank his coffee, then he smiled and stood up.
“I think I’ll be going,” he said. “It will be kind of difficult to find a decent place at this hour.”
He turned back and walked away. She quickly stood up, surprised.
            “But, Will…”
He didn’t say anything as his figure became smaller. She watched him left as she could feel some tears in her eyes. She wiped them with her sleeve, but some more tears rolled down to her cheek. She wiped them again, but they just kept flowing.
            “Shit…”
•••
            RIIING
“Yes,” the woman said as she picked up the phone.
            “It’s me, Lau…”
She smiled, then she turned away and smiled.
            “Yes…?”
“This has became a bit troublesome,” Devina said as she sighed. “I’m afraid things won’t go that well…”
Lau raised an eyebrow, then she sighed.
            “Is something out of track…?”
“More like out of track in purpose,” Devina said. “I mean, between the two of them…”
Lau bit her lower lip as she exhaled loudly.
“This is getting more dangerous than I ever expected…”
Devian sighed as she looked around her. Even more people were crowding the bar.
“And I’m quite afraid that they will move,” Lau said. “If this isn’t going as we wanted it to be, it’s dangerous.”
Devina could feel something choked her throat upon Lau’s words. She looked away and sighed.
            “What now…?”
Lau could feel the car stopped, then she sighed and looked out.
“I don’t know,” she said. “I think this will be much more complicated…”
She sighed again, then she leaned back to her chair.
“Let’s talk about this later,” she said. “I mean, it’s not like we can do something quite big at these times…”
            “Just wait…?”
“I hope we don’t have to,” Lau said. “It’s been quite boring these days, and I don’t like waiting.”
She smiled as the car crossed a traffic light. A few people were standing on the pavement, waiting for the trespasser lamp to turn green again.
“What to do,” she said. “Have you called your little friend…?”
Devina could feel something was stuck in her throat, but then she smiled.
            “Of course.”
“Call him again,” she said. “Tell him to suspect a few people. Include that wholw squad in…”
“Sure,” she said. “I will, and of course, including that kid…”
“Stop calling him a kid,” Lau said, quite loudly. Devina could feel her heart really stopped now.
            “He’s no longer one.”
