Rain (epi of shadow)

Rain

A man with black shirt was walking down the street. The street itself was empty – there was only him alone. He stopped at his place and looked around, then he walked again.
He walked again as his footsteps echoed around, despite there weren’t anything around him. He kept walking before he felt like something was following him. he stopped again at his place, then he turned back to check, but...
            But…
•••
William sat up from his bed, panting. He looked around to make sure nobody was around, then he suddenly felt something painful on his chest. He held it, then he slowly laid down on the bed again.
            “Damned thing…”
He took the alarm clock next to the bed and looked at it. The long arm was pointing at number three and the short one was at two. He put it down, then he slowly sat up, fighting the pain on his chest, and looked around.
            “it’s late already.”
He got out of bed and walked to the bathroom. He looked at himself at the mirror and sighed. He looked so ragged – so he thought.
“I have to go back to Kowloon…”
He sighed as he took the glass and filled it with some tap water.
            “At least, today.”
He looked at himself – again. There was an area around his eyes that were black – sign of lack of sleep. He sighed as he took the toothbrush and put some toothpaste on it.
Is this ever what you wanted…?
He looked down to himself as he brushed his teeth. He then sighed and looked away.
How pitiful. When I finally get what I want, I’m not happy.
            …
            Whatever. What is happiness anyway?
•••
“Kowloon Station. Please mind the platform gap.”
The door opened, then William walked out of the train. He walked to the escalator and it brought him up. He then walked out of the gate and looked around.
            “Hey.”
He turned back and saw a man with white shirt standing a few steps from him. He was leaning by the fence next to a counter.
            “Yes…?”
            “Follow me.”
            “Where?”
            “Just follow me.”
•••
The car stopped in front of a small factory-like building. William opened the door and got out along with the man. The man looked at him, then he smiled.
            “Do you know this place?”
“If I’m not mistaken, this factory is closed a few months ago,” he said. “Yes?”
“Yes,” the man said as he walked to the factory. “Come on in.”
William looked at it for a while, then he turned to him.
            “What for?”
            “My, just come in.”
The man walked into the factory as William watched him. He then sighed and looked away.
“My, do I have a choice,” he said as he followed the man. The man looked at him, then he chuckled.
            “My, so you really resigned.”
“If I mean something, I mean it.”
Willim could then smell something unusual. He covered his mouth and nose as he looked around.
            “Opium?”
“Policemen sure are sharp, even the exes.”
They walked further inside as William kept on covering his nose. The man smiled as he could see William wasn’t yet acquainted with their ways.
            “Are you feeling fine, actually?”
            “…”
William kept following him through the dim-lighted path as the man looked around. He then stopped and turned to William.
            “Tell me.”
            “…”
The man looked at him for a while, then he sighed in disappointment.
“Fine, you don’t have to tell…”
He turned back and sat on a chair just behind him. The old man was waiting there as he handled a few packs of white powder. William looked at them for a while, then he sighed and left.
            “I’m going.”
The man looked at him for a while as the old man in front of him took out a few more packs out of nowhere.
            “William Fu…”
William stopped at his place and turned back. The man took out a cigarette and lit it, then he smiled.
            “It’s still following you.”
William looked at him for a while, then he sighed and turned away.
            “I know.”
“You’re not going to make it disappear?”
William looked down towards his shadow for a while, then he sighed and walked away.
“Shadows follow you everywhere. You can never get rid of those. But to overcome that shadow and find your own light…”
He stepped out of the factory and looked up to the sky. It was dark grey.
            “It’s going to rain.”
