Original Sin

A woman in cloak was walking deep, deep in the dark forest. The forest, despite being illuminated by the full moon, was still dark and scary.
On a dark night, scary bears will come out…
However, the woman kept walking, past the bushes and trees and flowers, with the creaking branches beneath her foot. The nocturnals animals could be heard – the owls, the bats, but she didn’t seem to be afraid.
            “Ah…”
She arrived at a spot where the trees were clear, and moonlight was showering the area. On the spot, she could see…
Two bright, bright red fruits, lying on the ground for everyone to see…
If I bring them home, he would surely be happy…
She picked them up and held them in her hands, happily.
These must be gifts from heaven… Thank you God…
She stood there for a while, adoring the beautiful fruits in her hands.
Now… I shold hurry home, before any bear appears…
Suddenly she could hear some sounds of the branches with something heavy on it very loudly, very close to her. She quickly turned away, still holding the fruits, but it didn’t take long for a bear to appear.
            “No…!”
She quickly ran away, trying to run on full speed. She could hear heavy steps of the bear from behind her, which did no good but to make her worry more.
This must be the bear’s treasures…
            But no, no!
I’m not giving away this happiness!
She ran as fast as she could, past the trees, bushes, flowers, stepping on branches that creaked in pain. She cried, the bear cried, and the fruits cried…
She didn’t know where to go…
All she knew was to run.
            “Ah!”
She screamed and her branches creak as she felt her body lightened, but then something hard hit her chest, making her scream in pain. She sat up and held the crying fruits tighter, not willing to let them go.
She could feel the area around her became darker because of the bear’s shadow upon her. She shivered, feeling so afraid, but she didn’t let go of her ‘happiness’.
            “…No!” Never!
                                                                        ~•~

“These are mine! MINE!”
            “No! Give them back!”
“These are mine! Don’t you dare take them away!”
            “Ah!” The bear was crying…
“These are mine! MINE! You can’t take them away! Because…”
            “Because what do you… understand!”
~•~
            SLAM!
The woman panted heavily, still holding the fruits in her hands. She stood behind the door for a while, before she walked in further and was greeted by a smiling man.
            “You’re back, Eve…”
“Look, Adam!” she exclaimed happily. “I found these fruits in the forest! They must be gifts from God! Oh, how blessed we are, Adam!”
He gave her a warm smile as he looked down to the ‘fruit’s she was holding. But to his surprise, what he saw wasn’t fruits…
His face quickly saddened, from a warm, happy eyes, to mournful ones.
            What the?
            …
I guess she… couldn’t fully bear it after all.
“Look, Eve, dear. I know our kids are no longer part of this world, but… Please return these children to their mother’s side.”
The woman’s face quickly darkened, not believing what she heard. She looked down to the ‘fruit’s she was holding, but what was there was no longer two bright red fruits…
            “Ahhhh!!!”
            What did I… do?
But two tiny, frail children, sleeping peacefully…
            “No, Adam, this can’t be…”
“It’s not too late,” the man said, trying to comfort her. “Just return them to their mother’s side…”
            “But I… I… I can’t…”
            “Why not?”
            “Because…”
She fell on her knees, holding the fruits tightly. He knelt down along her, touching her shoulders.
            God, what a fatal sin I’ve done…
“Why? Come on, Eve, let’s go together. That way you don’t have to be afraid of those bears…”
            “But I… can’t.”
She looked up to him, crying mournfully.
“Can’t we keep them… and raise them as our own? Adam?”
But… why should we, if we can return them to their mother?
            …
            Wait…
He quickly stood up and walked out of the house, but just a few steps later, he saw…
A woman, lying on the ground, with a tiny basket next to her body. Inside the basket was…
            A bottle of milk…
~•~
            Fourteen years later…
“Today’s lunch is the deer father hunted this morning.”
She served the food on the small wooden table in front of two smiling kids – one was a boy, and another was a girl. The boy quickly stabbed the poor animal with his fork, tearing some meat off, then he ate it, smiling.
“Why, mother’s cooking is always delicious…”
“It’s all thanks to your father,” the woman said as she sat next to the man. “Perhaps you should start to teach Hansel how to hunt too, dear.”
He didn’t answer. He kept watching the two kids eating the animal he happened to get to trap that morning with a blank expression, as if he was thinking about something very important and couldn’t be disturbed.
Suddenly his mind flew back to that night…
To that night, where he found the body of a woman along a basket.

“Of course! I want to learn to hunt as well!”
“Ah, Hansel isn’t going to be able to do it.”
The boy turned to his sibling with a sour face, then he looked away.
“But you girls can’t do it either, right, Gretel?”
“What?” The girl’s face turned red in anger. “Who told you so?”
“Of course,” he said teasingly. “Because girls are weak~”
“Mother!” Every kid would scream out the same word on that kind of situation, no?
“Stop that, Hansel,” the woman said. “Come on, eat up, then take a nap. Then maybe your father would go hunt with you.”
            “Okay.”
            “Okay.”
~•~
            “Eve?”
The woman turned to her husband, who was still sitting on the table. He looked sad and somehow, depressed.
            “What’s wrong?”
“Eve, I…” He sighed, as if he was going to say something so wrong. “I can’t stand looking at those kids…”
            “Why not?”
“Because they’re…” He looked away sadly as the woman put the plates in the cupboard. “They’re… not ours.”
“So what do you suggest me to do?”
            “…”
She drew a thin smile on her face and walked over to him. She snuggled closer to him, as if she was trying to comfort him.
            “Return them to their mother?”
~•~
“Won’t it be safer to go hunt tomorrow?”
“It’s yur fault, Hansel! You woke up too late!”
“It’s fine,” the woman said with a smile. “There are still wolves to hunt at these times.”
The kids looked at each other, then they nodded, despite feeling some anxiety in their hearts. The man kept walking, holding a coil of rope in his hands. He looked ignorant, or perhaps – he thought he would be better off knowing.
Mother, will fortune be waiting for us at the end of this path?
Will we be able to eat our favourite snacks?
They arrived at a spot where the area was quite vast to set a trap. The man turned to his ‘son’ and forced out a smile.
“Come on, Hansel. You’re the one going to learn, right?”
The boy nodded and smiled, then he quickly ran to his father. Soon, the men were busy with the ropes – the man was climbing a tree with an end of the rope and the boy was waiting under the tree with the other end.
“You’re not going to teach me how to climb?”
            “You’ll be able to.”
The man stopped at a stern-looking branch, then he started to lower the rope.
“Hansel, leave that end and tie this one.”
            “But I don’t know how!”
            “It’s like tying your shoelaces!”
The boy dropped the rope he was holding, then he ran to the other end and tied it to form a circle. The man climbed down carefully, then he walked to his ‘son’ and tightened the knot.
“Now we should hide,” the woman said. “You two hide together, and I’ll hide with your father.”
            “Okay!”
            “Okay!”
“Don’t be noisy, or the wolves won’t come, okay?”
The couple left and the twins left, both heading toward the opposite direction. The man kept looking at the kids, worried, but then he looked down.
            …Let’s hope this is right…
~•~
Night has fallen on the woods.
The nocturnal animals were out from their hideouts, the moon, too, has appeared, and the wind grew colder.
Two kids, sitting under a tree, were shivering. They looked so frail and weak, as if they were there to be sacrificed for the wolves. One of them turned to the other, tears welling up in her eyes.
            “Hansel, it’s cold…”
            “I know…” He couldn’t do anything, either…
            “Where are mother and father?”
            “…”
The boy suddenly stood up and gave his hand to his sister. The girl shook her head, then she looked away.
“Mum said scary bears come out at night…”
“I’ll protect you. We have to go home, or we’ll be eaten.”
            “But… it’s so dark…”
The boy looked up, but he couldn’t see the moon. Trees made the area around them so dark. Only bits of moonlight could pass the leaves and reach them.
            Ah, maybe that will do…
“Gretel, give me your glass bottle.”
The girl quickly fished for something in her pocket, then she took out a tiny glass bottle and handed it to her sibling. He took it and positioned it under the moonlight, then the glass started to shine. The scene was awesome, and a smile was quickly formed on the girl’s lips.
“Hansel, Hansel, I think we should be able to go home.”
“Of course,” he gave a smile. “It’s not so dark anymore, is it?”
~•~
            “This way, Hansel?”
            “No, I think this way.”
“I’m not very sure. Which way is left?”
“Whatever, let’s just go this way.”
“W… wait, Hansel! I’m not as strong as you!”
“Be quick! Don’t be too loud or those bears will hear!”
                                                                        ~•~
The two of them walked, and walked, past the dark woods, and finally arrived at a vast place. They could see a house a few yards in front of them, and some noises from inside. They walked to it, feeling a little awkward about entering’s a stranger’s house, but they kept walking. They finally stopped before the wooden door, then they looked towards each other, afraid.
            “Hansel, you knock.”
            “Why not you?”
            “I’m afraid…”
“…” So you think I’m not?

However, the boy braced himself and formed a small fist, then he knocked on the door a few times and opened it.
            “Excuse us…”
He was startled. Inside was a witch, lighting the fireplace, and her henchman, holding a cauldron next to her. Hansel stepped back in fear, and Gretel peeked inside.
            “What’s wrong, Hansel?”
She looked inside was greeted by the same scene. But unlike her brother, she rushed in and pushed the witch into the fire. Her henchman quickly dropped his cauldro, trying to stop the girl, but Hansel rushed in and pushed the cauldron to him, causing him to fall under the cauldron. He quickly turned to his sister, worried.
            “Are you fine, Gretel?”
The girl was still panting as she watched the ‘witch’ screamed in the fireplace, which was killing her. However, her face showed no pity. She then turned to his brother and smiled.
            “Yes, she did nothing.”
They then looked around the house, and they could feel something gripped them.
            I mean, this place…
            It’s like we’ve lived here before…
~•~
            “Wait, Luka…”
“Only I can rule the country! You can’t!”
            “But, wait, Luka! Can’t we…”
“I’m much stronger than you! Isn’t it obvious?”
            “…I…”
The door flew open and a man rushed in.
            “What’s going on here…”
            “Look, Kiriru, dear.”
            “Luka, what… what did you…”
“Now, I’ll be the one to rule the country, right?”
Now the music box will no longer make music…
                                                                        ~•~
A blonde woman was walking deep, deep in the woods. The long, blac gown she was wearing swept the grasses, trapping the dead leaves and grasses. She looked just fine, not evil at all, but something about her was just strange…
As if she was the strongest, the atmosphere said.
No animals dared face her. Everything around her went silent as she walked past them…
Of course, to be the Sorceress of Time, Elluka Clockworker…
“Elluka, my friend… It’s been quite a while. Have me ask you a favor…”
“It’s fine,” she said as she stopped walking before a tree. “As long as it’s entertaining.”
“The seven sins that was spread around the world… I want you to recollect them.”
